Ideas for Teen Bedrooms

The most important thing to do when decorating your teen’s bedroom is to allow their input. Teenagers want their bedrooms to reflect their personal style. They are at a stage where they are searching for who they are, and the bedroom is a perfect outlet for creative expression.

Just like adults, teens need a private retreat where they feel comfortable, safe, and happy. And luckily, it’s easy to create this environment without breaking the bank.

Before you start decorating, decide on the mood your child wants in the room. Does your daughter want a dreamy, feminine room? Would your son like a cool, sleek vibe? Maybe your teen prefers a whimsical, trendy look. Knowing the mood you want will help you more easily choose the rest of the elements.

Color

Your teen probably knows what color they want the room to be. You can paint all the walls in your child’s favorite color, or simply use that color as the accent in the room. If your bedding and accessories are in the choice color, you can keep the walls neutral or paint them in a fun coordinating hue.

Furniture

Furniture should be comfortable and functional. Try some youthful, funky pieces, like bean bag chairs and large, colorful storage trunks.

Accessories

With the incredible multitude of choices available, accessorizing can be overwhelming for a teen. Help them out by discussing your objective for the room before shopping. Certain items, although attractive, just won’t work if a room is to look a certain way. Scour flea markets and garage sales for one-of-a-kind finds. Fill the bedroom with low-cost items that can be easily replaced when your teen’s taste changes.

Decorating your teenager’s room is a wonderful time for collaboration. Instead of trying to simply impose your own tastes, give your child guidance, and they will be able to design their own personal retreat.
